The Power of 90-Day Goals & Plans

90-Day Goals & Plans

When I work with my clients on business goal setting and marketing activity planning, the thought of planning out activity for 12 months can be overwhelming and intimidating for many. So, I shifted from 12-month increments to 6-month increments. Then, I’ve found in working with many entrepreneurs and business owners is that there is POWER  in focusing on 90-Day increments.

When we focus on 3 months/90 Days, it’s less intimidating and easy to manage, so for a while now I’ve really focused on 90-Day business goals and marketing planning with my clients. In fact, I created a planner that’s focused on planning your marketing for 90-Days (shameless plug for my planner, the B.E.S.T. Marketing Planner, a 90 Day Guide to Help You Master Your Marketing and Grow Your Business).

Here a some reasons why setting goals for 90 days and planning for 90 days at a time is SUPER powerful:

Do You Have a Business M.A.P.?

Do you have a business MAP?Do you have a business M.A.P.?  Wondering what a business M.A.P. is, and why you would need one?

It’s a Marketing Action Plan (M.A.P.), and you need one in order to take your business from one place to the next.

When you need to go somewhere, and you are not sure how to get there, you need directions.  You can use a map to get the directions, now a days that map is within your GPS either in your smartphone or in your car.  Well just like the map in your GPS, you need a M.A.P. for your business that is designed to take your business from point A to point B.  The destination may be different for each business, but the need to have a plan and take action is always necessary to get your business from point A to point B.

Similar to when you are following the directions in your GPS, you may at times need to make a u-turn or change routes, but the overall map in the GPS is there to guide you and get you to your final destination.  In fact, after we have made several miss steps or u-turns we love when we hear the words, “you have reached your destination“.  With a business MAP, you may not hear a GPS system say, “you have reached your destination”, but you know you have reached your destination when you achieve the business goal that you set out to achieve.

For example, if your business goal is to increase your sales by 20%, you need to create a M.A.P. on how to get there.  Instead of turns on highways and streets, the M.A.P. includes turns you can make in your marketing activity that can help you to reach your destination, so in the case of increasing sales, a M.A.P. could look something like this:

Point A-  Sales are 50 units a month

Step 1-  Increase leads by doing the following actions:

a.  Attending more networking events

b.  Placing ads on Social Media

c.  Creating an email campaign

d.  Creating an AdWord campaign

Step 2-  Increase referrals by doing the following actions:

a.  Joining a referral networking group

b.  Looking for referral partners

c.  Creating a referral partner program

d.  Having a referral incentive

Step 3-  Increase sales conversations by doing the following actions:

a.  Having monthly webinars

b.  Having monthly teleseminars

c.  Having monthly in-person events

d.  Having more one-on-one meetings with prospects

Step 4-  Increase your conversion rate by doing the following actions:

a.  Creating sales pages with good  content and strong calls to actions

b.  Creating emails with good content and strong call to actions

c.  Creating  videos with good content and strong call to actions

d.  Adding testimonials to your website and sales pages

Point B-  Measure the increase in sales

So as you can see the action that you take in your marketing action plan will determine the outcome of the destination of your business.  You can create a plan for each business goal that you have and make adjustments to the actions when necessary.

Have you created your business M.A.P.?  If so, what marketing activities do you include in order to reach your goals?

Learn How to Create a SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE Marketing Plan

marketing-strategy-planYou may have heard that all small businesses should have a marketing plan, but did you know that very few actually take the time out to create one.  The task of creating a marketing plan may seem daunting and intimidating, but you can create a simple and effective marketing plan by answering the following 8 key questions about your business:

  1. Who is your target market?

You’ve probably heard this before, but it is VERY important to understand exactly who your target market is for your product or service.  When it comes to understanding your target market, it is not limited to just knowing the demographics like the age range, gender, geographical location, income level, etc., but also knowing the psychographics of your target market.  This includes items such as belief system, personality traits, attitude, etc.  Once you understand the demographics and psychographics of your target market, then your marketing effort becomes much easier!

  2. What is the problem that your target market has (as it relates to your product or service)?

List specific problems that your target market has as it relates to your product or service. žImagine how these problems make your target market feel stressed out, overwhelmed, uncertain, etc. Once you fully understand how your target market feels, you will be better able to communicate effectively to your target audience!

  3. How does your product or service solve that problem?

žBe sure to focus on how the benefits of your product or service solves their problems.  You can mention some product features, but the benefits are what people are interested in. Benefits focus on the advantages i.e. your product makes a person look younger, become healthier, etc., and features focus on the characteristics of your  product or service i.e. over 10 years on the market, fast acting, etc. Your message should be 80% about the benefits of your product or service, and only 20% about the features!

  4. Why should they buy from you and not your competitors?

žWhat is your unique selling proposition? These are the things that make you and/or your company different. Your customers want to know what makes you better than your competitors. The more able you are to effectively communicate why your company is the best solution, the better your marketing efforts will be.

  5. Where is your target market?

You need to find out where your target market is located geographically and specific locations. This could include local (cities, counties, etc.), international (countries). žPlaces could include associations, festivals, groups, organizations, etc.Find out where your target market is in large quantities, so you can reach them in large quantities.

  6. How do you reach your target market?

Are you reaching out to your target offline through networking, advertising, media, or žonline through your website, social networks, blogging, etc.You should have several ways both online and offline to reach out to your target market.

  7. When do you reach out to your target market?

Create a marketing calendar. Plan out the next 90 days, 6 months, to a year of marketing activity.  Schedule your activity daily, monthly, quarterly, and stay organized.Plan out your marketing activity in advance in order to successful execute your marketing activities.

  8. What do you say to your target market?

How you communicate to your target market can make the difference between success and failure.  Use messaging that your target market can understand and relate to.Use appropriate messaging that your target market can relate to.  žKnow the best keywords and buzz words to use in your content.
