Why a Collaborative Book Could Be Your First Step to Becoming a Published Author

A lot of business owners carry around a quiet dream of writing a book someday. Somewhere between the idea and the actual manuscript, though, most of those dreams stall out — usually blocked by the exact things I want to talk about in this post.

I have been involved in several collaborative book projects and it can be a great first step to being a published author. Last month I co-authored the book Perfectly Positioned to Soar along with 9 other authors, but the first collaborative book that I was the visionary author of was the 90-Day Activate Your Faith Journal: Strengthen Your Faith by Overcoming Your Blessing Blockers.

This week I am revisiting the podcast episode where I sat down with two of my co-authors, Carol J. Dunlop and Patricia Hopkins, to talk about our collaborative book project,— and about why a collaborative book can be such a powerful first step toward becoming a published author, especially if the idea of writing an entire book solo feels overwhelming.

The 9 Blessing Blockers

Before talking about the book itself, it’s worth naming what actually stops most women of faith in business from moving forward — not just on a book, but on any God-given assignment. We call them the 9 blessing blockers: things like fear, perfectionism, self-doubt, indecision, and distraction, among others. These aren’t abstract concepts. They’re the specific, familiar reasons a book idea sits in a notes app for years, a launch gets delayed indefinitely, or a calling gets quietly set aside. Naming them is the first step to overcoming them — you can’t dismantle what you won’t name.

Overcoming Is a Daily Activity

Here’s something we talk about directly in the episode: overcoming your blessing blockers isn’t a one-time breakthrough. It’s a daily activity. Fear doesn’t get defeated once and stay defeated. Perfectionism doesn’t disappear the day you decide to “just start.” These blockers show up again and again, which means overcoming them has to be a practice, not a single decision.

That’s exactly why the format of the 90-Day Activate Your Faith Journal matters. It’s built around anchor scriptures and affirmations — specific pieces of God’s word to lean on repeatedly, day after day, as you actually work through what’s blocking you. And there’s real power in journaling as part of that process: putting words to what’s on your heart, in writing, in conversation with God, tends to surface things a purely mental “thinking it through” never quite reaches.

Why a Collaborative Book Is Such a Strong First Step

Here’s the part I really want to highlight for anyone who’s been sitting on a book idea: writing this book as a collaboration — as the visionary and lead author, alongside the other co-authors — made becoming a published author dramatically more achievable than trying to write an entire solo book from scratch.

A few reasons this matters:

  • Shared workload. You’re not solely responsible for every chapter, every
deadline, every piece of the manuscript. The weight is distributed across
co-authors who are equally invested in seeing the project through.
  • Built-in accountability. When other people are counting on you to deliver your
section, it’s much harder to let perfectionism or distraction quietly
    stall the whole project indefinitely.
  • A real credential, faster. You walk away as a genuinely published author
    — with your name on a real book, available on Amazon — without needing to
have solved every unknown of solo authorship first.
  • A lower-risk way to test the waters. If you’ve never published before, a
collaborative project lets you learn the process — publishing, marketing,
launch — inside a shared effort before you decide whether a full solo book
    is your next move.

If you have a message you feel called to share but the thought of writing an entire book alone feels like too big a blocker in itself, a collaborative book project might be exactly the on-ramp you need.
