Human Being v. Human Doing

REPOST FROM 6/22/21

When you first meet someone at a networking event, one of the first things that you might ask is “So, what do you do?” What we do plays so much of a large part of who we are that as a society we tend to focus on what we do instead of how we are being.  We would never ask someone “How are you being?” we would however say “How are you doing?”  The concept and fact that we are human beings and not human doings is so important that I decided to focus on this topic this week.

I remember at an event that I was hosting several years ago one of the attendees mentioned that she created a “being list” in addition to a “doing list”.  This concept always stuck out to me because I thought Wow! that’s such a good idea! We are so used to creating daily “To do” lists with all the things we need to get done, but have we stopped to create a daily “To be” list with all the ways we want to feel and show up in the world?

In this post, we will focus on human being v human doing.

The Key to Your Business Success

Do you have a desire to build a successful business? Two key steps to build a successful business are to define and identify.

DEFINE

Define what success looks like for you. Does success look like building a six figure business, seven figure business, or eight figure business. Does a successful business look like impacting thousands, impacting millions, impacting billions.

Ultimately as believers in business success is being in alignment with the assignment that God has given you and doing God’s will and way in life and in business. That’s what a successful life and business looks like for those who believe.

IDENTIFY

Identify the foundation of your business. Psalm 127:1 warns us “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat– for he grants sleep to those he loves. Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.”

Do not build your business in vain, create a solid foundation by seeking God on these five foundational things in your business.

1. Purpose

Your business purpose is the specific business intent for which your company has been formed boiled down to a single sentence (or two).

Purpose Examples:

Biblical– Jesus- To be a sacrifice for our sins To save us (our savior)

Business– Google Inc.- To make it easier to find high-quality information on the web

Mine
– Nadine Mullings Marketing Agency- My business was founded to make it simple and easy for business owners to market their business

2. Vision

A business vision is a mental picture of what you want your business to be at some point in the future, based on your goals and aspirations. It answers the question, “How will your company change the world?”

Vision Examples:

Biblical– Abraham- A father of many nations

Business– Nike Inc.- To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world. *If you have a body you are an athlete

Mine– Nadine Mullings Marketing Agency- Is to become a trusted resource and support for faith-based Christian women entrepreneurs and business owners who want to increase their impact, influence, and income in the marketplace

3. Mission

A Mission Statement defines what your company will do daily to make your vision a reality. It can include who you serve, what you serve, and how you do it.

Mission Examples:

Biblical– Jesus-
Teach, Preach, and Heal

Business
– Nordstorm-
To give customers the most compelling shopping experience possible.

Mine– Nadine Mullings Marketing Agency-
To help our clients to get clarity and simplify their business mission, message, and marketing

4. Who You are Called to Serve

It is important for you to niche yourself to a specific audience, so you can understand their needs and tailor your solution to their specific needs.

This includes their:

  • Demographics- the statistical data of a population, especially those showing average age, income, education, etc.
  • Psychographics– the attitudes and tastes of a particular segment of a population.

Examples of Called to:

Biblical
– Jesus-
The lost sheep of Israel

Business– Essence Magazine-
Essence is a monthly lifestyle magazine covering fashion, beauty, entertainment, and culture written for African-American women

Mine- Nadine Mullings Marketing Agency-
A woman entrepreneur or business owner who has an established service-based business who is a coach or consultant. She is faith-based, christ-centered and spirit-led

5. The solution that you provide in the marketplace

Define the problems that your ideal client may have as it relates to the product or service. You want to know what issues your ideal client has so you offer your products or services as the ideal solution.

Want to get clear on your marketing foundation including your purpose, mission, and vision so you can attract the people you are called to serve in the marketplace.

The Power of a Mission Statement

Do you have a mission statement for your business? It may seem like a silly exercise to create a mission statement for your business, but it can be one of the most powerful things you can do for your business because a mission statement can define what your company will do DAILY to make your business vision a REALITY. The mission statement is the “How” you get to your vision.

It can include why your company EXIST, what you DO, who you SERVE, and how you do it DIFFERENTLY. It completes the statement “I’m on a mission to…. (fill in the blank)”.  For example, My company’s mission is to encourage, empower, and equip women of faith in business with training, tools, and resources so they can thrive in life and in business.

Having a mission statement impacts the results of your business. I shared all about how it impacts your business in the post how having a mission statement impacts your business

The Power of Monthly Reflection

In my last post I shared my morning routine and shared how how you start your day can impact the results in your life and in your business.

If you missed that post be sure to check it out here. Today I’m sharing about the power of monthly reflection. Taking the time to reflect not only benefits you as you move forward in life and in business, but it’s also a spiritual principle.

So many times in scripture God instructions His people to remember, and not just to remember but to reflect.

One popular example of this type of instruction that stands out for me is in Exodus 20:8-11:

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

In this scripture, God commands us to remember and then goes on to explain why we need to not only remember, but also reflect on the meaning of the Sabbath.

One of the things I love about the start of a new month is that it offers you the opportunity to reflect on God’s goodness.  In fact, in my Passion Planner (one of the resources that I mentioned in the last blog post) they have a monthly reflection section, in this section you have to complete the following questions:

1. What was the most memorable part of this past month? Describe it.

2. What were the three biggest lessons you've learned in this past month?

3. Review your monthly activity. Are you happy with how you spent your time? If not, what steps can you take next month to adjust them?

4. What did you accomplish this past month? What are you most proud of?

5. How are you different between this past month and the month before it?

6. What or who are you especially grateful for this past month?

7. Name three things you can improve on this upcoming month?

8. From 1-10, how do you feel overall about this past month?

I enjoy doing this exercise on a monthly bases and I find that it helps me to stay focused, motivated and encouraged. What are your thoughts on monthly reflection? Do you practice monthly reflection? If so, do you have a structed reflection that consist of answering questions like the Passion Planner or does it consist of something else?

How you start your day matters

Does how you start your day matter?  I would say ABSOLUTELY!  How you start your day impacts the rest of the day and can even impact the week, the month, and the year.

When you start your day right it helps you to be more productive.  I’ve found that doing these 3 key things every morning has allowed me to experience supernatural productivity in my business.

Watch the video below or read the post to discover the 3 ways I start my day right and how this has led to supernatural productivity in my business.

Do you select a word for the year?  One of the key ways you can stay focused this year is to select a word to focus on for the year.  This year I was led to the word ELEVATE.  My goal this year is to elevate!  How about you?  What’s your word?  I would love to know so be sure to post in the comments below.

Do you select a guiding/anchor scripture for the year? My guiding scripture for 2023 is Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

This is a command, a declaration from God not just to Joshua, but to me, to you, to all of us as Believers to Be strong and courageous and to not be afraid or discouraged this year!

In addition to the word and scripture for the year I have a morning routine that helps me to stay focused and to start my day right.  This includes 3 key things I do every morning to start my day right, which has created supernatural productivity in my business:

1. Devotion, Meditation, and Prayer

For almost 20 years I’ve had the practice of reading a devotional in the morning to hear a message from God.  This year I’m reading the devotional “Quiet Times with God” by Joyce Meyers.  In the devotional I read the daily scripture, message, thought of the day, and additional scripture versus to go deeper on the topic.

My goal is not just to read the devotion but to meditate on the message and how it applies to my life and business.  After reading my devotion and meditating on the messages, I have prayer.  To pray for the day, to show my gratitude and to ask for God’s guidance and protection.

2. Journaling

Journaling is a fairly new practice for me.  It was recommended by my business coach a couple of years ago and ever since then, I’ve added it to my daily routine.  I have two sets of journals.  Believe Bigger by Marshawn Evans Daniels it’s a Devotional Journal.  It is helping me to work on my unbelief and teaching me to believe bigger.  It’s a 100 Day Devotional Journal that includes scripture, a message, a prompting question to journal on and then a prayer.  This has really helped to me focus on Believing Bigger in 2023.

3. Planning

The third and final step is planning. I use three resources for my planning.  For the past 5 years or so I have been using the Passion Planner to help me plan out my dreams, goals, and vision.  The passion planner has a mind map, that helps you to map our your goals for the year.  Then the month and then weekly/daily activities.

Lastly and probably the most important part of my morning routine is the business meetings with God.  During those meeting I sit with God to plan out my business activities.  I use the Faith Strategy Business Planner to help plan out my business day and my B.E.S.T. Marketing Planner to plan out my marketing activity for the day.

All of this is done with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. All of these things may seem like a lot, but it takes about 30-45 minutes in the morning and helps me to be clear, focused and aligned for the day and doing these things have led to supernatural productivity in my business. I’ve been able to accomplish so much more in my business by having this practice so far in 2023.

Do you have a morning practice?  Do you feel it’s important to start your day with a routine or ritual that helps you to be more productive?  Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments.

Self-Care v. Soul-Care

REPOST FROM 6/29/2021

There has been a lot of talks lately about self-care, especially for women and specifically for mothers who tend to have busy schedules that include taking care of kids, husband, house, work, etc.

I definitely believe it’s important for us all to make self-care a priority as the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So putting yourself first and taking care of yourself is important to not just your own well-being but for the people who are close to you.

In this post, I will be talking about not just self-care but specifically soul-care, what does it look like to take care of your soul on a consistent basis?

5 Key Points to Simply Believe!

REPOST FROM 8/28/2019

Last week we discussed CLARITY and how it equips you to effectively market your brand. Check out the blog to learn 3 areas you should be clear on when it comes to marketing your business.

This week I’m shaking things up a bit because I wanted to share with you a special message – my FAITH FRIDAY message. It works the same as Marketing Monday in that I choose a focus word related to faith in business. This week the word is BELIEVE. Watch the video and/or read the summary below to learn 5 key points about simply believing!

Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matt. 18:4 ESV)

5 Key Points to Simply Believing

  1. Serving God Should Not Be Complicated – Anything that you are doing in your business or personal life that is causing complication needs to have God brought in to clear it up. Chaos is not of God and does not serve God.
  2. Be Like a Child – simply enjoy yourself as children do. What are you doing to enjoy yourself? Be carefree and understand that God is in control. Believe what you are told in God’s word; God tells you what is promised so believe it.
  3. Believing Simplifies Life – God takes care of our circumstances. when you believe that God has your back, believe things will work out, believe His word. Believing releases joy and frees us to enjoy our lives.
  4. Diligently Do What God Says – Do what He says in His word and what He speaks to our hearts. We hear what God says when we are reading His word and when He touches our hearts.
  5. Put All Your Trust in God and Be Obedient – We have to exercise our trust in God by giving our circumstances and situations to Him to handle and then simply BELIEVE it is taken care of. Being obedient is simply doing what He instructs and believing it will be done.

Be sure to share your thoughts or points you gained about the devotional or blog in the comments. I am hosting the Power of Divine Alignment Summit next week September 26- September 30th where you will learn how to align your business and your belief.  Register here: Power of Divine Alignment Summit
